Hydroseeding, CT Before and After Care

Jan 11

The task has only just started since your grass received the hydroseeding CT. You will need to give your newly hydroseeded lawn a bit of TLC.

What are the most effective ways to ensure that you get the best results from hydroseeding?

  • Hydroseeds should be watered every day for between 10 and 20 minutes at a time.

  • The green color will fade after 2-7 days.

  • Watering should be done at 4:45 a.m. at 11:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Avoid watering after dark)

  • Depending on the time of year and the weather your choices for frequency of watering. It is recommended to water more often and for a slightly longer cycle you should water less frequently during the cooler months of autumn and achieve a shorter cycle.

  • Hydroseed needs to be kept moist for it to sprout properly. Hydroseeds don't have to be continuously saturated.

  • Do not pour areas of water on your lawn. Instead, ensure that the seeds remain damp and moist throughout the day. After about 4-6 weeks, you can begin to reduce the amount of watering you do at your leisure.

How can you keep hydro seeds in check?

With adequate germination, the germination process will begin in some areas within 10-14 days, and the lawn will be ready for mowing in 6-8 weeks. The lawn will fully develop in 6-9 months.

In the initial six weeks, avoid traffic within the areas that are planted.

Some areas will do better than others due to differing amounts of sunshade, water, and water. This is common with any application of hydroseed. After about 4-5 weeks, the lawn will begin filling with. It is worth scraping away any thin areas and planting them by hand. Mix fescue and rye together with Kentucky bluegrass to get the most effective results.

It is strongly suggested that you apply an 18-24-12 start fertilizer on your lawn once it is hydroseeded. Three weeks following the application then you can apply another beginning fertilizer. Do not apply any weed control to the lawn in the initial 10-12 weeks.

You might find weeds on your lawn. When the grass is established, you can use an herbicide to remove the weeds.

The first mow of the lawn will take place approximately 5 weeks after having hydroseeded. It is best to mow grass when it is dry, using a push mower. This will help prevent damage to seedlings that are newly planted. Before the initial mowing take a break from the water for a couple of days so that the soil has time to completely dry. The clippings can be left on the grass but clumps must not be put on the lawn because they could harm the new seeds.

Beware of allowing your lawn to get to a height that is too high. Then, cutting it down to an average height, will almost certainly hurt the grass and make it more difficult to bring it back to good condition. If you're going for a trip, or you are unable to mow your lawn for more than a week, you should get someone else to do it. Do not mow more than 1/3 of the total height of your lawn with a single mowing. If your lawn has grown too tall you should wait for about 4-5 days before mowing it down to about 3".
